Your registration will go smoothly if you are well prepared. It is important to review your holds, registration time tickets and remaining degree requirements prior to your time ticket opening for a successful registration period. You have the option of using either the Schedule of Classes or Class Schedule Builder to create your schedule.

Scheduling Courses

The Schedule of Classes lists all of the classes that are available for registration in a specific term. You must select the term in which you would like to search for classes before proceeding to the class schedule search screen.

Section Codes Defined
The section code that follows the course number; i.e. W01, refers to the type of course or instructional method.

Class Schedule Builder

The Class Schedule Builder is an online registration tool that integrates with the Student Information System. It allows you to select your preferred classes and block off time for work, practice, student organizations, and other personal commitments. The Class Schedule Builder will then generate conflict-free scheduling options for you! Simply choose the schedule from the available options that best fits your life and academic goals.

Registration Holds

Holds on your account will prevent you from registering for classes. We recommend that you resolve any holds on your account before registration begins. You can view any holds applied to your account by logging in to Owl Express through the “View Holds” link under the Registration tab. For more information about a specific hold on your account, please reference the below table.

Registration Errors

The information outlined below is designed to assist students when resolving registration errors.  The Registration Error messages located in the below table contains the instructions on how to resolve the issue you are experiencing. 

Instructions for Checking Prerequisites and/or Restrictions

  1. From Class Registration (Add or Drop Classes), Select Class Search
  2. Enter the Subject and Course Number, Select Class Search
  3. Click on the CRN for the course
  4. Click on Course Title (highlighted in red)
  5. Course Restriction and Prerequisites are listed at the bottom of the page.

Registration Adjustments for Pre-requisited or Co-requisited Courses

Students can swap sections of a course by completing the add/drop process in one transaction. 

  1. Enter the CRN of the new course into the Add Classes Worksheet 
  2. Click on the Action field by the course to be dropped, Select Drop Web
  3. Click on the Submit Changes button

The swapping section functionality is beneficial to students who have registration requirements (Learning Support, co-requisites, prerequisite courses).

Registration Error Message and How to Resolve

  • The Campus Restriction error will occur for Online Learner students. To resolve this error, students must register only for courses taught fully online.

    Example: An online learner attempting to register for a main campus course. Students who have signed up for an online learner program are not eligible to register for main campus courses.

  • The CLASS RESTRICTION error refers to a course that is restricted by student classification.

    To resolve this error, students must select a different course or seek override permission from the academic department offering the course.

    Example: KSU 1101 and KSU 2290 is restricted to freshman students.

  • The CLOSED SECTION error occurs when students attempt to register for a class that is full.

    To resolve this error, students should register for another section of the course or select a different course. If the course section offers a waitlist, consider waitlisting for the course.

    Closed course overrides are available only during the drop/add period. Students may inquire to the academic department and/or the college/school website responsible for the course that is closed. If approved, the department will enter the approval code in the Student Information System. The student must then register for the course.

  • The Connected Course Drop Confirmation notice will appear when students attempt to drop a course that has a connected or linked course, i.e., co-requisite or concurrent prerequisite course. 

    Drop both courses by clicking the DROP button on this page.

  • The CORQ (Co-requisite) error occurs when students do not register for a group of courses that are linked together. 
    To resolve this error, students must register for all co-requisite courses (CRNs) at the same time.

    Example: This registration error will most likely occur when Freshmen are attempting to register for courses within a Learning Community. Students must register for all Learning Community courses (CRNs) at the same time.

    Important Notes: 
    When registering for a science course that requires a lab, both the lecture and lab courses must be registered for successfully at the same time.  You will receive a course PREQ & TEST SCORE or CORQ Course XXXX REQ ERROR until registration for both courses (lecture and lab) are successful.

  • The CRN DOES NOT EXIST error occurs as a result of not using the correct CRN for a specific semester.

    To resolve this error, either enter in the correct CRN grouping (as indicated below) or select a different term.

    Semester CRN

    1. Fall Semester Begins with 8####
    2. Spring Semester Begins with 1####
    3. Summer Term Begins with 5####
  • The DEPARTMENTAL APPROVAL error occurs when students attempt to register for courses that are reserved for specific groups of students.

    To resolve this error, students will need to contact the academic department teaching the course in order to obtain permission to enroll into this course. Once permitted, the student must login to Owl Express and register.

  • The DUPL CRSE, Duplicate Course, error occurs when students attempt to register for the same subject and course number twice. Students needing to register for more than one special topics course may contact the academic department of the discipline for assistance with a repeat override.
  • The LEVEL RESTRICTION error occurs when undergraduate students attempt to register for graduate level courses.

    To resolve this error, students should only select undergraduate level courses.

  • The MAJOR RESTRICTION error occurs when students attempt to register for courses that are reserved for a specific degree/major or groups of majors.
    To resolve this error, students should register for another course or seek override permission from the academic department offering the course.
  • Maximum Course Load - During the Fall and Spring semesters, a student may register for up to 18 hours.  The Registrar may approve up to 21 hours for students with an institutional GPA of 3.5 or higher.  Course loads above 21 hours must also have a recommendation from the student’s department chair.

    During the Summer term, a student may register for up to 13 hours.  The Registrar may approve up to 15 hours for students with an institutional GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students not in good academic standing will be limited to 13 hours during any term. Course loads above 13 hours must have a recommendation from an academic advisor or department chair that is made to the Registrar.

  • The PREQ & TEST SCORE-ERROR occurs when students attempt to register for courses in which they do not meet the course prerequisites. Course prerequisites are checked during the registration process.

    To resolve this error, students should register for a different course in which they meet course prerequisites.

    A list of course prerequisites can be found by returning to the Registration Worksheet and clicking on Class Search at the bottom of the page. Click on the CRN and then on the Course Title. The course prerequisites are listed at the bottom of the page.

    When registering for a science course that requires a lab, both the lecture and lab courses must be registered for successfully at the same time. You will receive a course PREQ & TEST SCORE or CORQ Course XXXX REQ ERROR until registration for both courses (lecture and lab) are successful.Concurrent Prerequisites: a set of courses that must be taken simultaneously. 

    Labs and Lectures
    When registering for a science course that requires a lab, both the lecture and lab courses must be registered for successfully at the same time. You will receive a course PREQ & TEST SCORE until registration for both courses (lecture and lab) are successful.

  • The REPEAT COUNT EXCEEDS 1 error occurs when a student has exceeded the number of attempts allowed to repeat a course. Effective spring 2012, a student may repeat a course once. 

    Receiving this error means that the student has exceeded the attempts more than one additional time. 

    To resolve this error, the student may consult the academic department of that discipline to be considered for an override.

  • Reserved for students in a particular cohort. Examples are Honors College (H sections), Advanced Major Program (M sections), New Students at Orientation (N sections).  N course sections will open to the general population after the last orientation session.
  • The TIME CONFLICT error occurs when students attempt to register for courses that conflict or overlap by date and time.
    To resolve this error, students should register for courses on a different date and time.

Wait-Listing

Course waitlisting is available for course sections at the time of registration. Students must meet all course registration requirements (including prerequisites and co-requisites) before waitlisting. Once waitlisted, students may view their waitlist status in Owl Express, Registration Tab, Display Class Schedule and Grades.

  • Students will receive an email notification when a seat becomes available.
  • Students have 18 hours from the date and time of seat notification to register for the course or the student will be deleted from the waitlist.  Notifications of seat availability are emailed to student KSU email accounts.
  • ALL wait lists will be purged the week prior to the first week of class. Students will be removed from the wait list the week prior to the first day of class.
  • Students may register for open seats during the remaining days of Drop/Add.
  • Students MUST meet all prerequisites, co-requisites, and registration requirements to be eligible to waitlist.
  • Time conflicts and repeat limits are not checked when waitlisting for a course, but will be enforced when registering for a course.

How to Waitlist for a Closed Section Offering Waitlisting

  1. Login to Owl Express
  2. Select the Registration tab
  3. Select the Term
  4. Select Register for Classes
  5. Under the Find Classes Tab, enter the class details for your search
  6. Select Submit
  7. You will receive an error message informing you there is a waitlist
  8. From the drop down Action box, choose 'Wait List'
  9. Click Submit
